The Water Filtration Plant is manned by two
full-time certified Water Treatment Plant Operators. Both full
time operators also hold a Distribution Operator license. Yearly
they are required to attend additional classes to maintain their
certification with the New York State Department of Health.
Two times a year the Water Filtration Plant conducts hydrant
flushing, which cleans out the water system and prevents it from
becoming contaminated. This is usually done in the spring and
the fall. The dates appear in the News Herald and under notices
on this web site.
The Village of Ravena receives water from
the Helderberg Mountains and it is stored in the Alcove
Reservoir. The water travels from the reservoir to Deans Mills
via an open stream, where it is pumped to the Ravena raw water
storage facilities adjacent to the Water Filtration Plant off of
Martins Hill.
The south water storage reservoir holds 7.5
million gallons of water while the north reservoir holds 35
million gallons. At times of sudden onset of microorganisms and
algae, the storage reservoirs are treated with copper sulfate to
maintain the quality of the raw water supply.
The water purification filtration plant is
of the conventional rapid sand type consisting of mixing tanks,
settling tanks, and three rapid sand filters. The treated water
passes into a 500,000 gallon clear well where it is pumped into
a 500,000-gallon storage tank or a 797,000-gallon storage tank
on the hill and then to the Village distribution system.
Chlorine is added to the raw water as it
enters the plant and again as it enters the clear well. The
purpose of the chlorine addition is to sterilize the water and
make it bacteriologically safe to drink.
Sodium fluoride is added to the water and
is recommended by the New York State Department of Health, the
American Dental Society, and the American Water Works
Association. A residual fluoride concentration of 1.0 to 1.5
mg/liter is maintained.
The water supply system is monitored by an
alarm system to avoid any severe interruptions in water service.
The alarm system is tied in with the telephone system and
appropriate personnel are notified when the alarm is activated.
The Ravena Water Department maintains a
highly sophisticated purification and treatment system, which
consistently produces a high quality and safe water. This system
is maintained and operated by highly trained and qualified
personnel. The Village also contracts with a consulting Chemist
to oversee all water testing. |
